Snowmageddon Baby!

First it was Snowmageddon over the weekend.  Then we had another BLIZZARD over the last twenty four hours.  I'm not sure I've EVER seen this much snow.  School is closed all week.  The FEDERAL GOVERNMENT is closed, which makes me pretty darn happy since Uncle Sam's our guy and I get to steal my husband for one more day.  There is so much snow that no one is making puny little snowmen.  It's IGLOO time.  I haven't run out of provisions yet (three gallons of milk) so I think we're ok for another day or two.  This more than makes up for three snowless years in Nepal.

I am meeting the neighbors.  The children are having a BLAST playing in the snow.  The dog is really a wolf after all.  I finished a novel I've been reading for-ev-er.  We actually made some headway organizing the playroom. The forced cessation of go-go-go is a good thing - no, a great thing.

I realize a lot of not-so-fun consequences can come from a dumping like this.  Our boxwood is doomed.  I sure hope our gutters don't break off from the weight of the ice and snow.  But perspective, perspective people (read ... me) ... there are people who don't have food/water/electricity all over the world and close to home.

They say we're not done yet either - more snow in the forecast.  Inhale. Exhale.  Smile.

Bill should get awarded a PhD in shoveling ... snow that is.  (Note bent shovel!)

  2. I'm sorry if you're getting this twice, but I wasn't sure if you still use your Kathmandu email. So, please forgive me if I'm badgering you with questions!!

Hi! I recently stumbled upon your beautifully written blog while researching Kathmandu. My husband and I are praying about moving there later this year to teach at an orphanage in a seminary. I have so many questions and am hoping that you would be so kind as to answer a few of them.

I'm not a math expert, so I may be very off here, but was your son around 6 or 7 months when you moved to Nepal? How did you deal with immunizations with him? I have a 5 month old who will be just a bit shy of a year when we move. I'm wary of most immunizations, so getting extra ones is a bit scary for us. Did your family get the Typhoid and Japanese Encephalitis shots? What about your son? Honestly, this is the most scary part of moving to Nepal for me. I'm terrified about making a mistake with my baby's health...those disease profiles are scary! Also, did you have a pediatrician there? Could you please recommend him/her to me? Did you continue along the vaccination schedule there?

Do you have any suggestions about how to prepare spiritually, physically, and mentally while we're still in the US? I taught in China for a year and a half, but I know Nepal is extremely different.

What things should I be getting together to take there? Having lived abroad before, I know that there are days when I'll want spices or amenities from home. What things that we use in everyday life will I not be able to find in Kathmandu? For instance, there are no fitted sheets in China. I know that seems like a small thing, but it relieved a great deal of culture shock for me just to not have to safety pin my sheets to the bed.

Thank you so much for your help!

    Anna
